'GH' Falls To Record Lows

By , About.com Guide   January 27, 2012

Follow me on:

General Hospital hit all-time lows for the week of January 16-20, dropping to dead last in every single category.

While some blame the show's horror lead-in, others say that OLTL viewers are not watching GH, and others still -- and these are in the majority - blame the story arcs currently on GH and the aura of depression that permeates the show.

Ron and Frank, work your magic. At this point, General Hospital needs nothing short of a miracle.

They actually showed a ‘preview’ for GH at the end of GH instead of The Chew, The Revolution, or The View (oh, maybe they should call it The GH).

The acting is great, the dialogue is great, the stories have gotten interesting again, but yeah, it is dark.
There is no ‘love in the afternoon’.
It isn’t Happy Days.

Robert and Anna will be goofy if they comeback in the same spirit they left, however they are coming back to a daughter dying of HIV. THAT’S DEPRESSING.
The overall tone of GH is dark and it has been for many years. I like dark drama but I agree that we need some levity.

In the past we had Dianne, Max, Milo, Spinelli to balance out the darkness. Also more of Molly, too who shone a bright light.

Now we see less and less of those characters and when we do it’s not with much levity.

GH needs something positive… an emotional ‘out’.
My husband says the baby is Jason’s.
That would be a nice start.
(I glanced at the spoilers page.. I didn’t see much of anything ‘nice’ on there which is part of the problem… people can only take so much negativity).

I think GH has come far this week. We had a great week seeing vets play out storylnes and we were treated with a glimpse of some comedy thrown in. If I didn’t know better, I would say GH is being led by someone else very recently. :)

Here’s to a great week GH..though I haven’t watched yet today.

Friday Show: Still going strong.

‘Was he walking or floating’? (Johnny) LMAO! That was funny Sonny! (John @ the pier)

I walk around the house in my sweats or pj bottoms when I am home. I like being comfie. Though I drink coffee for breakfast and not wine!! LMAO! I also BRUSH the teeth first. Stanky breath Lulu!

On one hand I am happy to see Carly not with Shawn. I saw no chemistry and they are leaning her toward Johnny now. I still think Carly should go home and be a mother to her children first! But that isn’t who Carly is, is it?

IMO scenes are being cut and added. Though it may not make sense to see Sam & the Grasshopper, how do we know the original scenes weren’t cut? They could have been scenes of Maggie, or LIW & Delorse. Notice they were only on one day this week. I think they are being edited out. Which is fine with me!

Hey Sonny, Kate is in the process of taking you down. Wayyyyy down!
Are you ready?? lol

Clearly Sam is going to have a difficult pregnancy. Still, it will be worth it to get a little ’stone cold’ out of it!
Will their be a problem because of the test she took? Is that why Spinelli was rattling on and on about loving the baby no matter what?

I missed Tracey today. And Papa.
Didn’t Edward look old yesterday?

I am likin this show!

I am an long time OLTL fan and mean no disrespect to GH, but I will not ever be a GH fan like I was with OLTL. They are two very different shows. It doesn’t matter how many Llanviewers ‘transplant’ themselves to Port Charles. I have tried over the years to get into GH and I’m sorry, I just don’t get it. Who is Sonny and what’s the deal with Spinelli. ;-) I feel bad Ron and Frank are being thrust upon you. IMO Ron is the worst writer OLTL has had and he and Frank are a big reason it was cancelled. They replaced great romances and mysteries with teen sex and teen murderers. IMO The biggest problem for GH is The Revolution. It’s not just bad, its mega bad. How is Tim Gunn qualified to give “life changing” advice with only a BFA in sculpture. and Ty (Gary) Pennington with a “diploma” in art. They don’t have the credentials or the qualifications to do national TV. The others are an OBGYN and sex therapist. In contrast Dr. Phil has a Ph. D. and ran a successful private business. Lets all stop the insanity. ;-)

This is a post I just posted to my favorite blog site. Upon hearing the news of Kirstin signing a 3 year contract with GH, there was so much negativity that they put me in a bad mood.
Please people, prove me right! Let this blog be positive!

Seriously why you people watching GH with all your negativity??
The show has sucked to hell for the past year.
We finally see a change, a positive change, and people still can’t accept the positive.
Stop watching. I for one, am excited with this news. The news is telling me that GH has hope that they will remain on tv. So much hope that they are signing 3 year contracts. If they were 100% sure the show was over, they wouldn’t sign a contract like this. They will have to pay her once the show goes off. Why would they willingly do that? Will the show be cancelled?? Maybe. But it hasn’t yet, nor is anyone aware it has been cancelled. Apparently GH has an idea to keep going. Get on the train and enjoy what is to come, or stop watching the show. Geez if I hated something soo much I wouldn’t waste all my energy on negativity. I would stop what was turning me into the negative person. It is what it is on GH.

The ‘Jasam’ comment is ridiculous as ever. LET IT GO. There is no ‘winning & losing’ with this couple. There is NOTHING between Jason & Liz. NOTHING. They had a child because they had 2 nights of sex. Do I like Sam? NO! But Jason in this story, loves and adores her. So get over the Liason crap. NOT happening in the near future.

For those of you who are interested in blogs that think positive here is a link:

That’s all fine, but they don’t have to pay her off if the show ends or they terminate her. You can sign a ten-year contract and if you don’t work out with the show, they let you go.

It’s great that they are signing people, and I hope they keep doing it.

And compared to other sites, this is a positive site. I was pretty surprised when I went to look at the ratings to read the comments. There wasn’t one supportive or positive comment to be found.

I want to be cautiously optimistic because I really don’t want to see people hurt.

(8) Barb says:

The story line about Johnny’s sis/mom is stupid. That is part of the problem. Anyone who has been watching knows that Claudia was obsessed with having a kid with Sonny, and buying this turns on not having watched GH even for as long as I have… and that isn’t all that long.

GH needs a few characters viewers can actually LIKE. Mac should have a good, good-guy story line. The whole set-up with the good guys being murderers is made for darkness. Let somebody behave decently and have a goal. Maybe Mac can join with Matt on something. The need of the writers to turn everyone into a bad guy (even Kate now? Yikes!). I hope Kate and Shawn are feds working together secretly. That would be a nice turn. They clean up PC and get rid of much of the mob. A few people escape prosecution, but the focus moves to Matt’s research, and drug companies trying to undercut his approach because it will hurt their sales. There is plenty to mine without the mob.

Not writing to the history of the show is a big issue and has been for a long time.

January 28, 2012 at 5:39 pm
(10) debi says:

IMO only, Ron knows we are tired of the Mob. IMO again, he is doing away with it. And Sonny. Which would lead to MB exiting rumors.

I smelt something different & good this past week with the show.
Until they tell me its cancelled, I am going to keep supporting it.

So tired of reading negativity about this show and its future. Tired of reading people are done watching it if OLTL comes over.

Goodness, if you don’t enjoy something, change the channel then.

GH IS GREAT
dark…so what!?
some people like dark
most shows of any calibre are dark
often the so-called light moments are annoying
keep on with the mystery and love
love it

(12) Peggy says:

No, I agree that the fun stuff was fun. Diane was perfect for bringing levity. Dark is ok, but it needs balance with some fun….basically like every life has.

It is very likely that a lot of the audience have come to the conclusion that the show is doomed and there is no point in investing time by continuing to watch.

I have watched general hospital since I was a teenager just like many of you. there is more to this then just cutting a show on a network, and putting a lot of actors out of work. a lot of our lives, and many happy memories are involved. many of us remember when luke and laura got married! It was the big date Of the year! No one missed that episode! many people relate to their lives through these soaps. It may sound silly, but it’s a way to relax, enjoy, and live in a fantasy, for just one hour. the stories on general hospital are captivating and fun. many of us want that excitement in our lives! We live vicariously through general hospital! Abc, for your own sake and ours, leave us one lifeline.

excitement in our life

Rick Springfield will be back in March. Probably to wrap up the Robin storyline. Still, they got him back. For some, this is a biggie. Not for me!

(17) Brandy says:

Sonny is the most talked about character why on earth would they get rid of him. Just because some people dont like a little darkness so what. You think OLTL was all fairies and butterflies, puuulease!!! Guza had an a amzing imagination one that the daytime budget could not afford but his one error was balance. Everyone raved about Garin wow did that blow and these writers we have now. The even chased JJ away and it took so long to get him back, As for the storyline with Robin it will be daytimes most heartbreaking story ever, its an amazing way to to her exit that the actress choose to leave. I am totally looking forward to it and if done right wow stock up on the tissues. We need a little more romance and bring back Max and Diane funny as hell and spinelli and Maxie added for our comedy side not to mention our dark comedy side of Anthony. As for the new storyline with Claudia being johnnys mom it makes total sense and has brought us some amazing powerful acting scenes. If GH didnt have the mob we would be just like every other soap and we are not ever other soap. I do welcome a bit of change and will hold judgement till the new writers arrive and I am all for a few characters from OLTL coming and if they work thats great if not o well. I wish they would of brought jack and Sam (especially sam) jack would of been a good troubled teen for Molly. Would love to see Tea with Sonny talk about hotness wow. I think Todd will bring some comedy as well so this could be interesting. One thing is for sure, I will stay TUNED to find out!

I just learned that Ron hired yet another writer from OLTL.
This person is responsible for that beautiful speech Vicki gave about what soaps mean to people on one of the last days.

I read nothing but good and greatness for this show. I say by March it will be the MUST SEE of daytime!

(22) Annette says:

My husband and I almost lost it with Wednesday’s episode.
Where is Port Charles? New York, where the cost of living is higher than even here in California. Unless some crime family is going to do him ‘a favor’ on permits, labor, unions, equipment, civil and structural engineering, supplies, bulding, architectural, HVAC, not to mention water, plumbing, electric, buildout, inspections, finishing, more inspections, and all of the necessary materials and supplies (not including the millions of dollars needed for medicalequipment alone) I’m not sure how Sonny or the writers expect us to think $100,000 will buy a new pulmonary wing for GH. As a matter of fact I don’t think you can pick up most high quality dermatalogical lasers used at Medi-Spas for hair reduction, wrinkles and the like for less than $100,000

It’s more likely to cost upwards of $60-80 billion dollars.

My husband does structural civil engineering and deals with a lot or real life hospital funding.

This would have been an easy thing to fact check.
Instead Sonny looks more like a pompous idiot who thinks his cash is worth gold or the writers are just that dumb. They seemed to have dropped this dialogue for the moment as he is up in Kate’s business, so… Who knows the status? But as we were discussing funding it once again returned to mind.

@ Max: wouldn’t “The Revolution” being a really bad show be a good thing for GH? ABC can cancel that show & give Katie the timeslot that “The Revulsion” has now.

I’ve watched GH, AMC & OLTL for fourty years…I won’t be supporting ANYTHING on ABC Daytime (except for GH) now or in the future. I don’t even turn the channel to ABC until 2p when GH comes on.

I’m not happy with this show at all right now, but just in case the ratings people are monitoring my TV habits these days, which they easily do since everything’s digital now…I’ll have it on and record it, just so that I can FF through so much right now.
