General Hospital 2012 Review Part 2

By December 31, 2012

Follow me on:

Read our General Hospital 2012 Review Part 2 about the comings and goings this past year.

Two pivotal characters, Robin and Jason departed this year, Jason perhaps more permanently than Robin.  But this is General Hospital, after all, so as sad as their demises were, we could be seeing Jason again.

The mystery of Franco and his obsession was finally resolved. For that, we say amen!

Read Part II of our review here.

Maria, I want to thank you for your thorough and carefully researched 2012 review of GH, all 3 parts. I enjoyed reading all of them. I want to add that I watched Steve Burton’s appearance on “The Talk” on CBS yesterday. I wanted to see what he had to say but in retrospect, I wish I hadn’t as it made me feel bad. I think we’ll all agreed that he can do what he wants. However, the old saying “There’s a right way to do things and a wrong way”applies and in my opinion, he did it wrong. Also, appearing on “The Talk” was nothing more than a publicity stunt for Y&R as most soap viewers already know he is going to be on that show. Unlike Burton, Maurice Benard is a “stand up guy” who has loyalty and integrity. He recently said that Jill Phelps had gone after him for Y&R also but he chose to resign with GH. As I said, he has loyalty and integrity. On another topic, I still miss Lexi Ainsworth as Kristina but have gradually gotten used to Lindsey Morgan. I think it would have been better if she and Trey had gone off to CA together. I don’t see why they had to kill him off. Finally, Dr. Britt Westbourne. I am among many who cannot stand her. The next few months are important ones for GH, what with the ratings sweeps and the 50th anniversary. I don’t see why they should waste any screen time on her. I think her “man hunt” for Patrick is in poor taste, especially since little Emma is involved. Thanks again for all your efforts on this weekly column and for reading my comment. Long live GH!!!

Carolyn, thanks for your lovely thoughts. I didn’t see Steve on The Talk. I am certain that GH would have accommodated him going back and forth to Tennessee – in fact, I know they would have. They were very upset that he left. His actions surprise me – not that he left, but the way he did it. I thought he was better than that.

It’s not the way soaps work if the actors want to keep their fans.

Maria, I really appreciated your note and agree completely with what you said. I shouldn’t have watched Steve on “The Talk” because it made everything too real. For his “announcement,” the show went all out with confetti, balloons, and even a drum roll. It really seemed like they were rubbing GH”s nose in it, if you know what I mean. I don’t understand it. We agree it’s not what he did but how he did it. I too thought he was better than that. I went on Maurice Benard’s Facebook page and posted a brief note thanking him for his loyalty and re-signing with GH. I did not mention Steve as that would have been inappropriate but if Maurice reads it, he’ll know what I meant. Maurice is a “class act.” I thought Steve was too but apparently, that’s not the case. In Monday’s interview, Steve mentioned an upcoming tour of “Port Chuck.” I’m not interested in following his post-GH career but I did wonder if the group will suffer a backlash as a result of his actions. Thanks again for writing back to me.

I think Port Chuck will remain popular, Carolyn. I went to one of their concerts and met Steve, Brad, Scott etc. and wrote about it on the site. The manager of Port Chuck contacted me and said that Steve had seen the article and wanted me to have a free ticket the next time they came to Rochester. Guess what, no free ticket. I even wrote to remind the manager. So I did not attend the concert.

Maria, your comments are always interesting and I really enjoy them. I guess like a lot of fans, I get caught up in the public “persona” of the actor and think the individual is the same. You should have received that free ticket to the Port Chuck concert. I am glad, however, to know you think the Port Chuck group will not suffer any backlash from Steve. I do like them and wish them well. As a footnote, I read an article (I think it was in the Daytime Confidential site) in which Steve was asked about GH’s reaction to his departure. He said there were “no hard feelings” which I really can’t believe. It was hard watching McBain tell Sam yesterday that Jason is dead. I think Kelly Monaco’s tears were real. I remember reading how hard it was for her when he left and she was doing DWTS. On another topic, despite the ratings going up, do you think ABC will still replace GH with the medical reality show? I certainly hope not but if they do, maybe Prospect Park will pick them up also. Thanks again for writing.

KC, I don’t know what ABC will do. But I think their afternoon lineup is working very well for them and they would be foolish to change it. They are looking at the reality medical show for a cable station that they own or putting somewhere else – I really don’t think it will replace General Hospital.

Maria, thanks for your reply and your thoughts on ABC and a medical reality show. I value your opinion. I saw on the tv by the numbers site that GH has gone over 3 million viewers. With the upcoming 50th anniversary, nurses’ ball, more legacy characters returning and great stories, it will go even higher. Go GH!!!
