Nikolas Needs Her

From Amy Thompson, for About.com

I saw this coming from the moment Nadine walked into General Hospital. I knew she wasn't coming into GH merely as a hospital staff filler. I knew she wasn't going to be Spinelli's angel. I knew she wasn't there to clear her sister's name…no, her true destiny was and always has been to help Nikolas recover from his illness, from his loss of Emily. Nadine and Nikolas are meant to be. It's almost mystical isn't it? Like God took one angel from Nikolas and sent him another. I feel all warm and tingly inside, don't you? Okay, all kidding aside, I really do like where this Nadine and Nikolas union is heading.

Anyone should have seen from the moment Nikolas spoke up for Nadine that these two were headed on a collision course for love. Nadine wasn't even mad when Nikolas attacked her. She seemed to silently say, "I know your pain. It's okay." And what woman in Port Charles would and could do that now that Emily is gone?

Nadine is just what he needed at the height of his brain tumor, I can see Emily episodes. While it seemed that from day one, Nikolas may be the Nadine protector, now she is what he needs the most. Unlike most at GH who would think Nikolas was bonkers for "talking" to Emily, Nadine doesn't. She actually encourages it, calls it therapeutic and a gift that many others would love to have. She understands loss—first her father, then her insane sister. This understanding of losing a loved one will only make Nadine and Nikolas a strong couple—a couple understanding of what the other has gone through in their lives. Nikolas does not come from a loving, caring family, but one of freaks and dangerous villains. On the same token, Nadine's family is not one known for its warm Christmases around the fire singing carols and sipping eggnog.

What better way to get Nikolas through this tumor and the eventual permanent loss of Emily than a down-to-earth nurse who loves children, who has one of the bubbliest personalities and has a "glass is half full" attitude about everything despite her tragic life? When Nadine was with Spinelli at the Black and White Ball, it felt wrong…I didn't care for her. Usually these types annoy me, but there's something about Nadine and Nikolas together that makes her appealing; it makes her warm and loving and not just a dumb blonde nurse. I get lost in the pulling towards each other—the non-obvious attraction.

I can see Nikolas healing with Nadine by his side. I can see Nikolas being just as happy or happier with her. I can see Nadine being a loving mommy to Spencer. I can see Nadine bringing Nikolas back from the edge. I want to see it.

I know they won't come together in some fairy-tale moment like Nikolas and Emily. No, Nikolas will have to conquer his demons without the distraction of love. Helena will come back to haunt him, and he will come face to face with Emily's killer, and Nadine will be a soft voice, a guardian angel, to help him through it, but it won't be until after that they will realize what I knew all this time, that what they have is more than a friendship. They will come together in a moment of mutual understanding that they have been building a love that will take them past the horrors they've both been through. Nadine will be the princess that Emily never got to be. And I will enjoy that storyline!
