There's no question that the producers and writers of General Hospital are married to the mob. The character of Sonny Corinthos, portrayed by Maurice Benard, dominates the screen in air time and plot line, be it concerning his business dealings or his family life. GH has managed, over the years, to involve nearly everyone with Sonny and make them relatives. Mike Corbin is his father; Courtney is his half-sister, Kristina is his daughter; Michael is his stepson; Carly is his wife, which makes Bobbie his mother-in-law. Jason is now his brother-in-law. Ric Lansing is his half-brother which means that Elizabeth is his sister-in-law. If the character of Taggert hadn't been written out of the show, there were rumors afoot that, through Sonny's stepfather, Taggert was Sonny's brother as well.
Given Benard's enormous popularity, presence and the investment GH has made in his story arc, it seems amazing that they have recently decided to make him look like a blithering idiot. He buys into the Lily hoax, his eyes nearly bugging out of his head every time he sees her. Then, after she appears to him and talks to him and also to his child at assorted locations - the terrace, Kelly's, the graveyard (where she ran when Jason shot at her, like most ghosts would), he sits by her gravestone and asks for a sign. Seems like he'd already gotten plenty of signs. Some people just can't get enough. Sonny buys into every one of Alcazar's obvious manipulations It's only when "Lily" has to improvise and makes a mistake that he catches on. Guess the high-heeled footprints left at the graveyard, which is the only place in Port Charles that has constant fog, didn't convince him.
Now he's shot his wife while she was giving birth. Good move! That ought to make her run into his arms - if she ever regains consciousness, that is. Right now, she's dreaming that she's married to Alcazar. Something that many fans wouldn't mind seeing. It's one thing to have Sonny Corinthos be a guilt-ridden mobster, for him to be superstitious, jealous and for him to shoot his wife while he was shooting the man standing over helping her to give birth. And it's another thing to have him do the Sixth Sense bit of seeing dead people. But honestly, to have him doing all of that? Sonny, you look like a moron, not a mob boss.
