Finally, thinking Sonny was not coming, Brenda left the church and came face to face with Sonny. Sonny was shot several times, and when Jason arrived, Brenda was sobbing over Sonny's body. Sonny ordered Jason to hide Brenda in a safe house. Brenda thought Sonny was dead and blamed herself. Sonny was in the next room.
Brenda had to escape to warn Jax that Alcazar intended to kill him. When Jason left Benny the accountant guarding her, Brenda saw her chance. She arrived at the church just as Jax and Skye Quartermaine married. She followed them to their cottage and waited outside until Jax emerged. After hearing her story, she and Jax went to her old house, thinking she would be safe there. Unfortunately Alcazar remembered Brenda mentioning the place. He arrived at the house and shot Jax. Brenda jumped in front of Jax as Sonny arrived; he shot Alcazar but did not kill him. Sonny told Brenda that he faked his death to force Alcazar into the open.
Jax became paralyzed from the bullet. Brenda assured Skye that she has no desire to take Jax from her; in fact, she herself was living on borrowed time. But Skye watched as Brenda and Jax became closer as he recovered. Skye learned that Alcazar had lied to Brenda – she does not have her mother's illness. Realizing that she still loved Jax, Brenda convinced Jason marry her. Jason agreed – he didn't want Brenda re-connecting with Sonny.
Brenda and Jason Are Implicated in Alcazar's Murder
When Skye saw Jax and Brenda together, she hopped into bed with Alcazar. By then, Sonny had put out a hit on Alcazar. Brenda, concerned about Jax, went to Alcazar's hotel room to beg for Jax's life. Alcazar tried to rape her. Brenda ran, but not before she cut Alcazar with a knife. Jason, en route to kill Alcazar, saw Brenda and helped her get away from the hotel.
Later, Jason and Brenda learned that Alcazar had been murdered. Scott Baldwin considered both of them suspects. Skye was very happy to give testimony that Brenda murdered Alcazar. Jax confessed but was cleared. Brenda and Jason decided not to annul their marriage, but stay married to protect themselves in court. Though Jax took Brenda out of the country, Brenda couldn't let Jason face a murder charge by himself. She returned to Port Charles and underwent hypnosis, hoping to remember something helpful. She recalled seeing Ric Lansing outside Alcazar's room. Ric denied any involvement in the murder.
Nervous about what evidence might be on the yacht, Brenda searched the wreckage, but passed out in the cold water. Gia and Nikolas found her. In the hospital, she gave Jax a key to a safety deposit box that she found on the yacht. Once the box was opened, the police confiscated it. It was a video of Brenda attempting to stab Alcazar after an argument. Jax left town to arrange things for Brenda's escape, and Brenda begged Jason to leave the country with her. Jason, in love with Courtney, refused to leave. Brenda stayed also. Brenda and Jason are found guilty of murder. New evidence set them free.
Alcazar, who was not indicted for Jax's shooting and still alive, coerced Skye to help him kidnap Brenda. Skye was terrified of losing Jax, so she went along with it. Alcazar grabbed Brenda and took off by plane, but Sonny was aboard. The plane crashed in the jungle. Alcazar and Sonny had a vicious fight. Jason and Carly located Sonny and Brenda. Jax found out about Alcazar lying to Brenda and that Skye knew. Angry, he left Skye to search for Brenda. The two reunited, and Brenda was thrilled to learn that she was not carrying her mother's disease.
Annulment, Another Botched Wedding, and Farewelll, Brenda
Brenda and Jason left the country to obtain a quick annulment, but Brenda changed her mind, under pressure from Jax to marry him. She wanted to get the annulment in the states so it would take longer. The situation came at a bad time for Jason: Sonny was unhappy over Jason's relationship with his half-sister Courtney, and Jason gave her up for her own protection. Otherwise, he might have wanted a quick annulment. Brenda comforted him, assuring him that he did the right thing. In the end, she decided that she was ready to marry Jax, so the annulment was obtained.
The night before her marriage to Jax, Brenda saw Sonny on the docks. They had unfinished business from the time he left her at the altar and finally confronted it. She forgave him. The two kissed passionately. Carly saw her husband with Brenda; upset, she raced from the scene and reported to Jax what she saw.
Before the wedding, Jax asked Brenda if she had anything to tell him. Brenda, very happy, answered no, all she wanted was the wedding. But instead of an “I do” at the altar, Brenda heard Jax say “I don't.” He turned to Brenda in front of the guests and announced that he knew she kissed Sonny. The wedding was off. She learned later from Sonny that Carly had left him.
When Jason returned to his penthouse, Brenda was packed to leave. Jax dropped by to give Brenda money – he wanted her to take it and never come back to Port Charles. The woman he loved drowned with her mother. Brenda refused the money. Jason drove her to the airport. Brenda told Jason that he deserved happiness and should work out things with Courtney. Then she left with her memories of Sonny and Jax.
In 2004, Brenda's best friend, Robin Scorpio, returned to Port Charles from France. She had seen Brenda in Europe and told everyone that she was doing very well. Brenda returned to Port Charles in August of 2010, missing her old life - and Sonny.
