Elizabeth by now was working as a waitress at Kelly's and met attorney Ric Lansing, who was living at Kelly's. Elizabeth was interested in Ric until Carly told her that Ric raped her. In fact, Ric needed leverage at the time and told Carly that he had slept with while she was passed out, her when, in fact, he hadn't. Ric turned out to be Sonny's jealous and manipulative half-brother. Adela, Sonny's mother, had basically turned Ric over to his father, Trevor Lansing. Ric resented that.
The Ric Lansing Agenda
Ric wanted to work with mobster Faith Roscoe to take down Sonny. He and Faith decided to frame Jason for the murder of a man named Fowler. Faith and Ric congratulated themselves on their success by making love. Ric wasn't finished yet, though. He blackmailed Courtney - if she would marry him, he would make sure the evidence against Jason didn't reach the police. It didn't work out; Jason won out in the end.
Ric decided to take a chance on a decent life. He had fallen in love with Elizabeth and proposed to her. Faith wanted Elizabeth dead so she could have Ric to herself. First she put a snake in Elizabeth's studio, and Elizabeth was bitten. Shortly after being treated for the bite, Elizabeth found out that she was pregnant with Ric's child. She and Ric were very happy. An angry Faith pushed Elizabeth down a staircase, and Elizabeth miscarried. When Ric learned that Elizabeth had been in conversation with Sonny shortly before he fell, Ric believed that Sonny caused the miscarriage. He purchased a house for Elizabeth and himself, a house with a panic room, unknown to Elizabeth.
Ric Kidnaps Carly
Carly and Sonny were busy preparing for Jason's and Courtney's wedding. On the night of the wedding, Ric kidnapped Carly and put her in his panic room. Carly was pregnant; Ric announced that once the baby was born, he would take the child, and he and Elizabeth would raise it. Meanwhile, Ric was doctoring Elizabeth's orange juice with birth control pills so she wouldn't become pregnant herself. Well into Carly's captivity, Elizabeth found the secret button to the panic room and pushed it. When she saw Carly, Elizabeth suffered an embolism, thanks to the combination of the birth control pills and the shock. Eventually, Elizabeth remembered seeing Carly, but by then, Lorenzo Alcazar had found her and taken her, using Carly as leverage for his own plans.
Elizabeth Loses Her Sight and Discovers She is Pregnant
Courtney suffered a miscarriage, and watching Jason and Elizabeth hold up one another while Emily endured cancer made her feel even worse. Courtney developed an addiction to painkillers and ran Elizabeth down with her car. The accident caused Elizabeth to go blind for a time. Faith Roscoe broke a headlight on Ric's car to frame him for the accident, and Ric was arrested. When Elizabeth regained her sight, Ric wanted to start over with her, but Elizabeth felt that she couldn't trust him. Ric tried to prove to her that he was over his hatred of Sonny.
Elizabeth turned to Zander Smith, who had broken up with his wife, Emily. Ric and Elizabeth reconciled, but by then, Elizabeth was pregnant with Zander's child. Ric and Elizabeth remarried, with Ric intending to raise Zander's child as his own. He and Elizabeth decided to tell Zander the truth. Zander agreed to the arrangement. Later on, he was believed killed in the Port Charles fire, but he wasn't. He resurfaced and kidnapped Emily. He ultimately forced the police to shoot him.
Elizabeth gradually realized that Ric was still obsessed with Sonny. She divorced him and left town to give birth, returning with baby Cameron. She also enrolled in nursing school.
Elizabeth as Surrogate
Elizabeth soon found herself back with Lucky. Shortly after reconnecting with him, Lucky lapsed into a coma from injuries incurred saving Emily from Helena. Once he came out of the coma, the two decided to move in together. Elizabeth, though, was a student nurse, and Lucky had just started work on the police force. They also had the added pressure of hospital bills.
The solution came in the form of Jax and Courtney. The couple wanted to have a baby and needed a surrogate. Lucky wasn't enthusiastic, but he agreed. However, Courtney learned that her eggs were not viable. Elizabeth donated her own eggs for in-vitro fertilization. Lucky liked that even less.
Elizabeth conceived, but Courtney started to feel left out of the entire process. She and Jax grew farther apart while she turned to Nikolas. While Jax wasn't in love with Elizabeth, and vice versa, he was protective of her, which Lucky resented. When it became apparent that Nikolas and Courtney had fallen in love, Jax and Emily ended their marriages. Elizabeth refused to give the baby she was carrying up to a broken home, and Lucky supported her. In desperation, Jax pretended to forgive Courtney, and the couple reconciled. Jax intended to stay married to Courtney until the baby was born and in their household. He then would divorce Courtney.
Tragedy Strikes Elizabeth
Courtney figured out Jax's plans and left him. Elizabeth and Jax decided to share custody, as it would be the best thing for the child. One night, while Jax was driving Elizabeth home from work, they ended up in a car accident. Jax had swerved to avoid hitting Carly who had run out into the road and frozen when she saw the approaching headlights. Elizabeth was rendered unconscious and, when she came to, had no memory of seeing Carly. Jax took Elizabeth to the hospital right away and she was checked out and given a clean bill of health. Later that evening, Elizabeth collapsed. She was rushed back to the hospital where she suffered a miscarriage. Elizabeth tried to return the money that Jax paid her but Jax refused to accept it. He felt that Elizabeth more than deserved the money after everything she had been through.
Elizabeth became deeply depressed over losing the baby. However, Lucky was a great support, and the two found their deep love again.
