Jax and Brenda reunited at the expense of Jax's new bride, Skye. Brenda survived the car crash and was rescued by Luis Alcazar's ship. She stayed with Alcazar for four years, believing she had inherited her mother's mental illness. Alcazar promised her that he would keep her from harming herself and keep her away from Port Charles. Brenda, however, wanted to return to Port Charles and leave Alcazar. She showed up the night of Skye's and Jax's marriage, and they delayed their honeymoon so that Jax could help her.
Jax became paralyzed during a shoot-out with Alcazar. During his recovery, he found out that Skye knew that Brenda wasn't dying after all, but hadn't said anything. He broke up with Skye and reunited with Brenda.
Marriage Plans but Murder Instead
Jax and Brenda planned to attempt to marry again; the Quatermaines threw an engagement party for them, after which Alcazar was thrown off the balcony of his hotel and killed. Brenda was a prime suspect since Skye stepped forward and claimed that she had witnessed the murder. Jax hired Alexis to defend Brenda and even confessed to killing Alcazar himself, but Brenda was tried with Jason Morgan and found guilty. The real killer came forward and gave evidence only the cops knew, and Brenda and Jason were released.
Jason and Brenda actually had married as a favor to Brenda - they had intended to get an annulment earlier, but when the murder indictments came down, they thought they were safer staying married. Finally, they got an annulment, but to Brenda's surprise, Jax's "I do" sounded suspiciously like "I don't." Jax knew that Brenda had run into Sonny the night before - Carly had seen them - and she and Sonny had kissed. In fact, it was a final goodbye kiss. Jax gave Brenda every opportunity to tell him about it, but she didn't. He concluded, in front of their guests, that he could not marry someone who didn't love him and wasn't honest. Brenda was humiliated.
Jax tried to mend his broken heart with a steady succession of women.
