Claudia Zacchara prides herself on her color pallet, which is mostly black, and being trashy. She was born into the Zacchara mob family and is mainly interested in gaining power within the Zacchara organization through her marriage to Sonny Corinthos. This has given her a position in the family that she's never had before.

Claudia's mother, Domenica, is deceased, after being devastated by her break-up with Claudia's father, Anthony. Anthony married a woman named Maria, who gave birth to Anthony's only son, Johnny. By all accounts, Claudia was a difficult child but was always deeply devoted to her little brother, Johnny.

Claudia's father, Anthony, is deeply disturbed. Eventually he sent Claudia to live with his brother Rudy in Milan. Rudy is also a mobster, and Claudia observed a great deal.

Due to her father's instability, Trevor Lansing, Anthony's attorney who actually ran the Zacchara organization, was left to deal with young Johnny Zacchara. He had Claudia come home because he knew she was a good influence on her brother. Anthony was institutionalized. Trevor sexually abused Claudia. Claudia wanted to take over the organization, but she wasn't allowed to.

Claudia first met Sonny in a bar right before her family moved to Port Charles. Kate had just rejected Sonny's marriage proposal. Neither knew the other; they slept together. Claudia later realized that Sonny was her father's Port Charles mob rival when she called a meeting with the Five Families. Sonny let the Zaccharas know they weren't getting his territory. Claudia, however, was interested in starting an affair with Sonny, but he wasn't, due to his love for Kate. She later hired Ian Devlin to kill Sonny; instead, Devlin shot Sonny's son Michael by mistake. Michael went into a coma. This is a situation that will come back to haunt Claudia, make her the victim of blackmail, and cause her to fear for her life.

After Kate was shot at their wedding, Sonny wanted his territory back from Jason. When he couldn't get it, he joined the Zaccharas. Anthony demanded that Sonny marry Claudia so that he would become family and therefore loyal. Sonny complied. Claudia is hoping this will give her the power she has always craved. She only has to hope that Sonny never finds out that she was the one who put his beloved son in a coma.
