Everyone, it is said, has a double somewhere. General Hospital is proof of that, as time and time again, we've seen characters show up who are dead ringers for citizens of Port Charles. These include doubles of Mac Scorpio, Sam McCall, Lucky Spencer, Nikolas Cassadine, Emily Quartermaine, Grant Andrews, and Kevin Collins.
Let's face it - bringing in a double is a good entree into a storyline; it is also a way to bring back an actor whose character was killed off. Sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn't.
Meet a few of the twin sets who have graced General Hospital episodes over the years.
1. Grant Putnam: The Psychotic with the Face of Mr. Nice Guy (1984, 1987-88)
In the original Grant Andrews/Grant Putnam story, the evil Putnam (Brian Patrick Clarke) was supposed to kidnap Robin and keep her in a cage. For some bizarre reason, the network censors objected, and the scene was killed. Killed. Yes, Grant Putnam did a lot of that, both in and out of the asylum.
2. Ryan Chamberlain: The Psycho with the Face of a Psychiatrist (1994)
Ryan Chamberlain struck terror in the hearts of Port Charles, and his double, poor Kevin Collins, received the brunt of it when he arrived in town.
3. James Meadows: The Kidnapper with the Face of a Kidnappee (1998)
How's this for a dilemma? Your doppelganger proposes to someone and she accepts, thinking it was you! Now what? This is what faced Mac Scorpio when his evil twin James Meadows got Felicia Jones' attention in a big way!
4. Connor Bishop: The Dead Soldier with the Face of an Amnesiac (2004)
You've lost your memory, and a kind young woman comes along and tells you that you're her husband. Do you believe her? Or do you run in the other direction? If you're Nikolas Cassadine, you stick around and try to see if anything hits a familiar chord. Alas, the only chord this lady is striking is in a MINOR key.
5. Alicia Montenegro: The Eurotrash Dancer with the Face of an American Klutz(2005)
You and your rich boyfriend love music and love to dance. But dancing's as far as it goes. When the wedding bells sound, you take off. Leaving your greedy mother to find someone to help with the wedding - and not the preparation - no, she wants someone to play THE BRIDE.
6. Mateo Ruiz: The Priest with the Face of a Killer (2005)
In a reverse of the evil twin storyline, with Manny and Mateo Ruiz, we have the evil character whose twin is actually a man of God. Is he for real? Or is it Manny the slimeball just hiding those tattoos under a priestly collar?
7. Rebecca Shaw: The Bad Girl with the Face of a Good Girl (2009)
Wandering around a burning hospital isn't anyone's idea of a high old time unless your name happens to be Rebecca Shaw. Before the place started filling with smoke, Rebecca figured the more she walked around checking her text messages and waiting for elevators, the more likely it was that her mark would see her. Her mark? The love of her late lookalike's life. But are both of you going to make it out of those flames alive?
8. Ronan O'Reilly: The Killer with the Face of a Cop (2010)
Lucky Spencer is feeling the effects of a dull life - his fiancee slept with his brother, and the cop business is getting a bit routine. Along comes Interpol with an outrageous offer: How would you like to be assassin in a far-off land? Oh, and by the way, the person you're portraying? Well, he's dead.
9. Alcazar and Eckert - These Don't Count
Yes, there have been pretenders to the "twins" thrones, but they weren't really supposed to be twins.
