General Hospital's Supercouples, Past and Present

Since the 1980s, soaps have tried to have "supercouples" - high-profile, popular couples audiences can attach to and follow. These couples don't have it easy: multiple marriages (sometimes to each other), illegitimate children, murder, faked death, disappearance, institutionalization, return from the dead. Let's not forget drug addiction, amnesia, rare illness, even blindness. And what female half of a supercouple hasn't been kidnapped? Here are a few supercouples General Hospital has given us over the years. They've had many. And why not? General Hospital invented the supercouple.

Luke & Laura: Love - on the Run or Standing Still

What is a supercouple? Wikipedia says: "A supercouple...intrigues and fascinates the public in an intense or even obsessive fashion. The term was coined in the early 1980s when intense public interest in the fictional soap opera couple Luke Spencer and Laura Webber from General Hospital made the pair a popular culture phenomenon." What is a supercouple? Luke and Laura!

Sonny and Brenda: Body Heat

The definition of "sex" was definitely Sonny and Brenda. Their dark, sultry good looks, amazing chemistry and super passion ignited the fans. The screen crackled whenever they appeared. There has been tenderness on General Hospital, sexiness, passion - but never anything quite like the fire created by Sonny and Brenda.

Jason and Elizabeth: Love's Labour's Lost

"Liason," as they're known by their many fans, never a couple long enough, despite the fans clammoring for them to get - and stay - together.

Robin and Stone: The Heart Will Go On

The young and tragic love of Robin and Stone is one of the best-remembered stories on General Hospital.

Nikolas and Emily: Dreaming Wide Awake

In dreams, a ghostly presence brought on by a brain tumor, prison, amnesia, cancer - this couple has loved through it all.

Anna and Duke: Love Has Many Faces

Anna Devane and Duke Lavery - nothing could keep them apart, including a new face and voice for one of them.

Sonny and Carly: The Curtain Never Quite Falls

This couple has been down the aisle more times than a grocery store shopping cart. One of the most exhausting couples on General Hospital.

Frisco and Felicia: Reel Life Becomes Real Life

Lovers, daring adventurers, and in and out of each other's lives, Frisco and Felicia have left a powerful legacy in Port Charles.

Elizabeth and Lucky: First Love

Elizabeth Webber and Lucky Spencer, played originally by Rebecca Herbst and Jonathan Jackson, subsequently by Jakob Young as Lucky and finally, Greg Vaughn, a supercouple on the soap opera General Hospital

Jax and Carly: Love Born Out of Hate

Blond and beautiful, hunky Jax and sexy Carly are one of the most volatile couples on General Hospital and have suffered from third party interference.

Anna and Robert: The Spy Who Loved Me

Spies in love - WSB operatives Anna Devane and Robert Scorpioa were a couple before they appeared in Port Charles, broke up, and found one another again on General Hospital.

Ned and Lois: A Double Life

Rich boy meets working girl and marries her. Just one problem. He's already married.

Sean and Tiffany: A Rose By Any Other Name

Sean and Tiffany, played by John Reilly and Sharon Wyatt, were a fun and fresh couple. Tiffany was a film actress, and when we first meet Sean, he's having an illicit affair with Monica Quartermaine!

Steve and Audrey: The Originals

General Hospital's original love team was Steve and Audrey Hardy, when the show - and they - were young.

Robin and Patrick: Scrubs Love

Beneath the insults, there was an undercurrent of mutual attraction. Who knows what would have happened if the condom hadn't broken?

Maxie and Spinelli: The Geek and the Chic

Can a computer nerd and a fashionista in the making find true love?
