GH, You Need to Lawyer Up!

Several situations have taken place lately on General Hospital that make me think that the show needs a legal consultant as well as a medical one. If you know anything about the law, the show's storylines can be difficult to buy into at times. If you live in New York State (home of Port Charles) and know anything about the law, it can be darn near impossible. Never mind that a district attorney takes personal clients and has time to make out with a guy in her office - but come on. Diane representing both Sonny and Jason now that Jason has taken over the organization? Conflict of interest much?

Several recent situations stand out, the most egregious being the custody/visitation battle in Drake v. Scorpio. There is no such thing as fighting for custody or visitation of a child that hasn't been born yet. At least on One Life to Live, the judge threw a similar case out. That wasn't right either, but it was closer. The case never would have been brought.

Then there's Jax, who mentioned to Carly that he pled "no contest" to a charge. Not in New York State he didn't. No lo contendere or "no contest" does not exist as a plea in New York State.

Somewhat attached to legalities: Jason's other office, the PCPD interrogation room. He sits in there all day and receives callers, including Anthony Zacchara, who would like him dead. It's not just Jason who holds court there. Everyone does. Absolutely anyone can visit a prisoner, at all hours. And how exactly did Lulu get in to see Johnny while packing heat?

There are always inconsistencies and unrealistic things in just about any story. Many times, these situations are often why we love a show. I certainly don't love General Hospital any less, but let's face facts: its illegal legalities are mounting!

You’re absolutely right! I try to accept GH’s many breaks from reality as just par for the course in the soap world, but it’s difficult sometimes. The PCPD interrogation room as the prisoner of the moment’s personal office space has been the most infuriating lately. And I know they tried to explain away Lulu sneaking the gun into Johnny by saying that she wasn’t frisked because she was Lucky’s sister … still. That wouldn’t fly in any real police station, not to mention she walked in with her hand shoved into her purse!

The breaks in reality don’t only occur within the legal system. For instance, how likely is it that Sal and Lourdes would leave Prof. Siegel’s apartment empty (in New York City no less) and continue to pay the utilities on it for months, when they could easily be renting it out for additional income?

Well, when I was writing for this site previously, I wrote about the updated time travel in Port Charles. Remember Sonny in France dashing back to the PC Courthouse and getting there in 5 seconds? That kind of thing makes me nuts.

Finally some logic. I sit everyday annoyed by constant swinging door in the PCPD! I am also tired of Mac and his personal vendetta. I have never seen a police commisioner that so inept.

I’m always cracking up that people tell their deepest, darkest, most illegal secrets in the confines of the PCPD interrogation room. If someone would only bug that room, they’d have all of the answers!!!
